When I decided to study abroad in Rome, I was looking forward to seeing all of the tourist attractions like the Trevi Fountain, but the thing I was the most excited for was the food. I love Italian food and Rome definitely doesn’t disappoint.

Suppli- Suppli originates from Rome and it’s a very popular dish here. Many people order it as an appetizer when going out to dinner. Its also very common to eat it as a quick snack while waiting for a bus. suppli_rome_italy_karawhite_photo1

Pizza Margherita- Pizza Margherita is similar to a plain cheese pizza in the United States. It was  created in Naples in honor of Queen Margherita in 1889. The ingredients are very fresh and the crust is thin. All of the pizza I have tried in Rome has been delicious. Pizza Margherita is easily my favorite, but Pizza Provola e Speck is a close second. It’s a white pizza with just provolone cheese and speck. Speck is very similar to prosciutto, but it is saltier. pizza_rome_italy_karawhite_photo2pizza_rome_italy_karawhite_photo3

Pasta Carbonara- Carbonara was created in Rome during the time of World War II. This is because they used the eggs and bacon that was supplied by the U.S. troops. They combined eggs, bacon, cheese and pepper to create a pasta sauce. Spaghetti is commonly used, but other types of pasta can be used as well. This is easily my favorite dish I have had during my time abroad. I was hesitant to try it because I don’t like eggs, but you can’t really taste them in the dish.pasta_rome_italy_karawhite_photo4pasta_rome_italy_karawhite_photo5

Gnocchi- Gnocchi is a pasta made out of potatoes. Most restaurants have a few different types of freshly made gnocchi, especially on Thursdays. My favorite is gnocchi al ragu. This is basically gnocchi with a bolognese/meat sauce.

Gelato- Gelato is similar to ice cream but it uses milk rather than cream. I love gelato and thankfully there is a Gelateria right near my apartment. On our walking tour of the city, the ISA staff told us to look for Gelaterias that serve their gelato in covered silver bins. This means that the gelato is fresh and has high-quality ingredients.

Caffe Latte/ Cappuccino/ Granita- One thing to know about Italians is that they love their coffee. My favorites are caffè lattes and cappuccinos. They are very similar, but caffè lattes have more steamed milk in them compared to cappuccinos. Italians will typically only drink either of these for breakfast and then have a caffè normale the rest of the day. A caffè normale is an espresso. There are also a few places that granita di caffè. This is espresso and shaved ice with whipped cream. Even if you don’t like coffee, you should definitely try this while you are living in Rome. The best place in Rome to get this is right near the Pantheon.
