1.     How has studying abroad influenced your role as the Assistant Director of Student Activities?

My experience studying abroad in Florence helped me understand the value in living, working and communicating with people who are different from you. I feel that I have a much better understanding of cultural awareness since studying abroad, which has influenced by work as the Assistant Director of Student Activities. Working on a college campus, I interact with students of all backgrounds and with diverse interests. Studying abroad helped me feel more confident and comfortable stepping out of my comfort zone and into unfamiliar situations.

2.     What is your favorite aspect of your current role? What have you learned so far?

My favorite aspect of my current role is the opportunity to advise students and to help shape their college experience. During the three years in my role, I have learned so much about the unique experiences of college students. Directly working with students has not only strengthened my professional skills, but has also helped me learn more about myself and my own personal development. I think the biggest lesson I have learned is to take advantage of opportunities when you can and to step out of your comfort zone, even when it feels challenging.

3.     Did studying abroad influence your studies in Nonprofit Management?

Studying abroad definitely influenced my studies in Nonprofit Management. I have always been passionate about working in the nonprofit world, and wanted an opportunity to connect the nonprofit sector with my passion for travel. My dream job is one that would merge the two!

4.     Have you traveled since studying abroad in Florence? If so, where?

Yes, I have definitely continued to travel since studying abroad! After my semester abroad, I promised myself that I would continue to travel to at least one new place each year. I am committed to continuing to learn about myself and the world through travel and intercultural experiences. I have since been to Poland, Dubai, Thailand, Greece, Germany, Amsterdam, The Bahamas, Barcelona and back to Florence! It’s important to me that I continue to stay adventurous and explore new places.

5.     Any new hobbies or adventures?

My most recent adventure was a trip to Germany and Amsterdam. I went with friends for Oktoberfest, which I highly recommend, and we made a two-week trip out of it. I am currently in the process of planning another trip to Greece for my friend’s wedding, and am looking forward to continuing to grow and develop through travel!
