Table Mountain (Cape Town, South Africa)
All of the views with none of the effort. Table Mountain makes it easy to enjoy lunch on top of the world, thanks to the convenient cable-car which will take you to the summit of this flat-topped mountain. Fill your picnic basket with food from local eateries, then lay out your feast on one of the picnic tables and take in the sights below. It’s a view you won’t soon forget!
Villa Borghese (Rome, Italy)
Ask any local or tourist where the best picnic spots in Rome are and Villa Borghese will no doubt be on that list. This public park sets the bar for picturesque picnic locations and is the perfect setting to indulge in some Italian bread and cheese while you take in the scenery and escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Make the experience even more memorable by renting a rowboat and navigating the park via its tranquil pond.
Letna Park (Prague, Czech Republic)
Views for days — that’s what awaits you at the legendary Letna Park in Prague. Whether you’re studying abroad in this medieval city or just visiting, there’s no better place to get a birds-eye view of Praha. Pack a picnic and snap some photos as you take in views of the Vltava River, the Charles Bridge, and the sprawling city below.
Philopappos Hill (Athens, Greece)
Picnic off the beaten path at the historic Philopappos Hill. While it may not be the tallest hill in Athens, its prime location gives you spectacular views of the Acropolis, the sea, and the city. Enjoy your meal in the shadow of the Philopappos Monument, a marble tomb and monument for an Ancient Greek senator, then, on your way down, check out the two caves carved into the rock, known as the prison of Socrates.
Tenorio Volcano National Park (Costa Rica)
Sky blue waters, a picturesque waterfall, and tranquil hot springs are just a few of the reasons why Tenorio Volcano National Park is a great place to spend an afternoon. Pack a picnic and eat lunch on the banks of the azure waters and then go for a dip in one of the pools. There are plenty of photo-ops in this national park, so be sure to charge your phone before you visit.
Rikugien Park (Tokyo, Japan)
Picnic under blossoming cherry trees at Rikugien Park in Tokyo. While its counterparts may be much larger, this Japanese garden is considered Tokyo’s most beautiful landscape garden, making it a tranquil and scenic spot for a picnic spread. Take photos of the Togetsukyo Bridge, a stone bridge that rests on two large rocks, and then sip on some matcha at the Fukiage Chaya Teahouse by the lake.
Huayna Picchu (Peru)
If you’re looking for the best views of Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas, then look no further than Huayna Picchu. This mountain rises above the Inca City and offers an incredible birds-eye view of the ruins below. It’s a bit of a hike to reach the top, but just think of the photos! No doubt you’ll be hungry by the time you reach the summit, so pack a lunch you can enjoy while you take in the spectacular landscape.
Parc des Buttes-Chaumont (Paris, France)
Looking for a prime picnic spot with a little bit of everything? The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in Paris is one of the largest green spaces in the city and features caves, waterfalls, a suspended bridge, and, of course, incredible views. Snap photos of nearby Sacre-Coeur and the Temple de la Sibylle, perched on top of a rocky cliff in the park.
Parque del Retiro (Madrid, Spain)
Picnic like royalty at Spain’s most famous park, originally built as a retreat for the Spanish Royal Family. Enjoy lunch and a siesta by the lake and snap photos of the Crystal Palace, monuments, and natural scenery. While you can always rent a rowboat and paddle around the lake, you’ll have to explore the Paseo de la Argentina, or Statue Walk, by land. So many photo-ops, so little time!
