5 Perks of Working in Waiheke

Ashley Lynch is a student at Chapman University and an ISA Featured Photo Blogger. She is currently interning abroad with ISA in Auckland, New Zealand.

Almost a month ago today, I made the journey from San Diego, California, to Waiheke Island, New Zealand. During this short period of time interning on the island, I have fallen in love with the island. For those interested in interning, visiting, or moving to Waiheke Island, I’ll share with you a few of the reasons I enjoy living here!

1. The weather is nice all year long

The seasons in New Zealand are opposite of the United States, so I left summer in California for winter in New Zealand. However, the winter weather I have experienced on the island, consists of temperatures up to 70 degrees with an occasional tropical shower and the evenings bring in the crisp, cold, night air.

2. Lots of Walking trails

On the island the only public transportation is by bus, which departs at different times and when used often can quickly become an expensive means of travel. Many people, including me, prefer to walk everywhere–to work, to the grocery store, etc. Walking on the island is safe as there are many sidewalks or what locals like to call “footpaths” provided.

3. Incredible views

I actually enjoy my walk to work every day as I am able to enjoy the breathtaking views all around me.

4. Beautiful Beaches

My favorite thing to do is watch the sun set on a nearby beach and watch the warm colors highlight the natural beauty of the island.

5. Delightful Cuisine

There are many quaint shops on the island including specialty grocery stores which provide organic produce and meat. The island is known for their Te Matuku oysters one of their largest exports supplied in various restaurants and vineyards on the island.

It is nice to have a warm place, with great food, stunning scenery, and friendly people, it makes it much easier to call this new place my “home.”

The world awaits…discover it.

I have received the opportunity to intern at Stonyridge Vineyard located in Waiheke Island, New Zealand. During my internship in I hope to learn new event planning skills that will benefit me in a future career in the entertainment industry. After following the organization on multiple social media platforms I am excited to see the breathtaking scenery of the vineyard for myself. When I am not working as an interning I would like to explore the island by hiking, swimming, and kayaking. I take pleasure in adventure and new experiences and I am anxiously awaiting my internship abroad this summer!
