Prague: The City You’ll Fall in Love With

Summer Driessen is a student at California State Polytechnic University – Pomona and an ISA Featured Blogger. She is currently studying abroad with ISA in Prague, Czech Republic.

When most people think of Europe, they think of Paris, London, Berlin, and just about all of Italy. Unfortunately though, most people would not put Prague on their top 5 places to visit. Here is why you should.

1. Prague is affordable.

Now I am not saying Prague is so affordable that you can eat out all the time and spend money on whatever you please. However, I am saying Prague is affordable enough that you can save money just by living in this city. For example, going to the grocery store here in Prague (Tesco, Marks & Spencer’s) you will spend about $30 on a week’s worth of groceries. Going out with friends at night means having a great time for about $10.

2. Prague has a great transportation system.

Took a train for three US dollars and ended up in Karlstejn and saw a beautiful castle.

Prague has three main metro lines. The A line, (green line) will take you basically everywhere you need to be in Prague, including the airport, Charles University, Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square; as well as the B line (yellow line) and the C line (red line). Also the Czech Republic is in the center of Europe and the Prague train system will take you to just about every country around for an affordable price.

3. Prague has great food.

If you love food you’ll most definitely love Prague. Anywhere you go in the city you will find an impeccable beef goulash and a fabulous pork knuckle. Prague is also great at adapting to other cultures and bringing them to the city with a little twist. Some of my favorite Italian, Japanese, and Mexican food is situated in the center of Prague. For example, you have to try Yami Sushi, Pasta Fresca, Agave Mexican restaurant, and whatever dessert you can get your hands onto.

4. Prague is actually a fairy tale land.

When describing Prague most people would say it  looks like you’re in a fairy tale. They are 100% correct. There are cobblestone streets, horses walking around, a castle situated at the top of a hill, and buildings that look like they were picked out of a movie. Prague is the definition of a beautiful city.

5. Prague has an interesting history.

Before I came to Prague, I knew not one thing about the city’s history. Now I know that Prague was the former seat of the Holy Roman Empire. It is actually one of the oldest cities in Europe (Celts lived here around the year 4000 BC)! Czech people are very prideful, and their culture and history is shown in their architecture, food, streets, and museums. Trust me when I say you will not regret visiting the Capital of Europe!
