During students’ time studying abroad in London, they’ll have the opportunity to participate in a number of different ISA included excursions. One of those is to the Canterbury and Dover Castles.
The city of Canterbury has two castles, six museums and attractions that echo from the Middle Ages. Students can join pilgrims on their journey from London to Canterbury as described in Geoffrey Chaucer’s “The Canterbury Tales.” The Cathedral, St Augustine’s Abbey and St Martin’s Church now form the trio of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Canterbury. St Augustine’s Abbey was built in 597 A.D. and is the oldest parish church in England still in use.
After lunch travel to the famous white cliffs and explore Dover Castle which boasts a colorful and fascinating history. This castle used as a military fort during both World Wars was strategic to the British war effort and most in danger. Re-live the turbulent war years and discover the labyrinth of Secret Wartime Tunnels built deep within the cliffs where military personnel worked and lived sometimes for years without stepping outside. Walk through the rooms where Sir Admiral Ramsay planned the “Miracle of Dunkirk” and tour the underground hospital as you follow the story of a wounded wartime pilot. In the castle itself you can see recreated displays of royal life and the bright colors that would have adorned their furniture and walls.
