When you first think of Spain, the first cities that usually come across people’s minds are Madrid and Barcelona. However, Valencia – the third largest city in Spain – is a hidden jewel with a long and rich history.
This is a view of la Plaza de Reina from the top of the Micalet Tower. It is quite a workout to get up there – 207 steps, no elevators – but the view is definitely worth it.
And when you come back down to la Plaza de Reina, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants where you can get gelatos, coffee, sandwiches and much more!
Right by the Micalet Tower is a landmark of Valencia, the Valencia Cathedral. If you’ve been to other grand cathedrals of Spain, like Toledo Catheral, the one in Valencia might look small. But, once you go inside the cathedral, what you see will take your breath away.
Not far from la Plaza de Reina, there is L’Amoina, an archaeological museum with Roman ruins.
And near L’Amoina is the world’s thinnest building, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Mercat Central is one of the oldest general markets in Europe. There, you can find fresh fruit, seafood, jamon, postcards and many other things fairly inexpensively.
Walking away from La Plaza de Reina area, you could look back at the Valencia Cathedral for another amazing view.
Then before you realize it, you’ll be at another central plaza of Valencia, la Plaza del Ayutamiento!
