For over 3 years, Syrians have been fleeing the conflict and hardship of their country and pouring into neighboring Jordan, leaving behind homes, belongings, friends and pursuits. Although already strapped for resources, Jordan has generously opened its borders and now supports an estimated 1 million refugees in several camps throughout the country, including Zaatari. To put things into perspective, Zaatari refugee camp is now the second-largest in the world, hosting around 120,000 displaced people. This makes it the fourth-largest city in Jordan.
In cooperation with ISA- International Studies Abroad, Mary Daniels and Cori Cummings (Program Manager and Site Specialist for Jordan) have decided to help. They will be participating in the Couples Triathlon on July 13th in Austin to raise money and awareness of the refugee situation in Jordan. Gustavo Artaza, President and CEO of ISA, has also pledged to match every dollar donated up to $1,000.
All proceeds will be forwarded to Mercy Corps, a global aid agency dedicated to providing emergency relief to people after natural disaster, economic collapse, political upheaval or conflict. Mercy Corps has been on the ground working to provide everything from sustainable food and water resources to playgrounds, clothing, health and hygiene supplies and more.
We encourage you to show your support through donation and to share this fundraising initiative with your friends and family via social media and word of mouth. Join with us, as we Tri for those in need!
