Every day when you are studying abroad is pretty good, but there are a few of those days that you just know you are going to remember forever as the highlight of the experience. One of those days for me happened as the result of my midterm project for my cultural photography class. I had to do a photo essay on a cultural topic so I decided to reach out to a local guy I had met during the first week of school who had told me he was in a band.
After a few Facebook messages I had a date and time set up to spend the afternoon photographing his duo project with a female friend. Now, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but he had sent me a few tracks and I liked the music and was excited to spend more time with Costa Ricans. After he picked me up, we drove about 45 minutes outside of San José and into the foothills to his family’s farm. It was so beautiful and they grow most of the food that they eat in addition to having horses, a pet pig named Petunia, and a horde of Corgis that they breed.
Both group members play the guitar and sing and they spent the afternoon rehearsing one of their songs and then recording it in the home studio. They were both so talented and it was really amazing to be able to listen to them all day especially while doing another thing that I love, taking pictures. It was interesting to learn about the process of recording a song as well and my professor loved the photo essay.
The experience is one that I will always remember and it allowed me to learn so much about local culture in Costa Rica. The people here are so friendly and welcoming. It was incredible to be included in such a special day. If you’re interested in listening to the group’s music you can find it here at: mariotanzi.bandcamp.com.
Good experience! :)
