Movies have always had the ability to transport us – to different times, to new worlds and to far-flung places. What better time to partake in the art of cinema than when we’re all #StayingHome? We asked our staff for the movies that’ll get you pumped for your future study abroad program –
check out their recommendations below!
Amelie – “Amelie is the perfect feel-good movie to watch in these troubling times right now. I suggested it because no matter how many times I watch it I fall in love with Paris all over again. It shows a different side to the City of Light, the quirkier side yes, but all the dingy metro stops, the little cafes, and the unknown streets that the natives like Amelie traverse every day shows you why people fall in love with Paris. It will make you want to travel there of course, but you will also want to travel everywhere the gnome goes as well (just watch it to understand 😉). ” – Alex, Account Support Coordinator
Midnight in Paris – “In a time filled with wanderlust and a desire to escape reality, Midnight in Paris kills two (mocking)birds with one stone. It’s a nostalgia-filled film that will take you through the streets of Paris by day and the 1920s by night, exploring the personalities of artists like Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Picasso, and Dali. Lighthearted, funny, romantic, and intriguing, Midnight in Paris will have you wishing you could travel to France and back in time!” – Morgan, Program Manager
Hector and the Search for Happiness – “Hector (Simon Pegg) is a London-based man who loves the ordinary, comfortable routines of life. He likes his toast in the mornings, his day job as a psychiatrist, and his stable relationship with his girlfriend. He finds himself inexplicably drawn into a search for the pursuit of happiness and, through this search, he knocks down the tidy and dependable walls he has built around himself as he explores Asia and South Africa and forms new relationships with people from various backgrounds and cultures. In a manner like our adventures in study abroad, Hector discovers something that alters his worldview forever: ‘We should concern ourselves not so much with the pursuit of happiness, but the happiness in pursuit.'” – Erin, Program Manager
Hunt for the Wilderpeople – “Directed by Kiwi director Taika Waititi, you’ll find yourself immersed in New Zealand culture through the stunning scenery of Auckland, the Coromandel, and Tongariro National Park as well as the strong kiwi accents and slang. I think the story of a boy running away from everything resonates with what we all wish we could do right now. Also, it’s hilarious. What more could you want? (I studied abroad in New Zealand and lived in Auckland, so I may be biased, but I stand by this being an all-around excellent movie!)” – Nikki, Social Media Manager
Mamma Mia – “I studied abroad in Greece, so whenever I want to be taken back to the amazing times I had on the Mediterranean I watch Mamma Mia! The little islands we boated to off the coast of Greece was one of my favorite parts. Each island was unique and had its own personality and this movie reminds me of that. The scenery, the amazing cast (I mean Meryl Streep & Colin Firth!), and of course ABBA makes it an incredible movie to watch at any point, but especially for those missing being abroad or traveling.” -Andie, Regional Director
