The Great Outdoors of Scotland – Outlander Edition

One thing is for sure about many people in Scotland – they LOVE Outlander. For those that don’t know, Outlander is a TV series about a woman named Claire who time travels to Scotland in the 1700s. Now in this time, the Highlander culture was huge. I started and finished the show this past summer and fell in love. If you are in the Glasgow or Edinburgh area, definitely check out the numerous tours that take you into the countryside to see many of the castles and villages made famous due to the filming of Outlander!

Doune Castle served as the home for the Clan MacKenzie.
This market area in Culross represented the centre of Cranesmuir.
Midhope Castle was one of my favorite spots on the tour. Out in the middle of nowhere is the film site for Jamie Fraser’s house.

While on this tour, I found many other people who had a shared love of the show. Even my tour guide was in on the action! He kept asking if we had seen the ghost of Jamie Fraser yet!

I think this is my favorite stop on the whole tour by far. Sitting on the edge of the water, Blackness Castle was home to Fort William.
Linlithgow Palace was the last stop of the day. This Palace enabled the horrors of Wentworth Prison to come to life.

Even if you are not a fan of the Outlander series, these are places you don’t want to miss out on! Scottish history is so unique, and I like to think these landmarks take us back in time!
