As small as Ireland is, it is made up of many unique and diverse counties, cities, and villages offering many different things. ISA offers programs in 3 of these cities in Ireland: Dublin, Galway, and Limerick. With all of these unique cities, how do you know which city is the right fit for you? Don’t worry! Here’s what you need to know about ISA’s study abroad programs in Ireland.
Dublin: Friendly, Young, & Bustling
As the capital of the Republic of Ireland, Dublin is the largest city on this list and is considered one of the most youthful cities in Europe. Dublin is a popular study abroad destination for American students — and it’s easy to see why! Students love this bustling city with its friendly locals, stunning architecture, and famous pub scene.
Despite being the country’s cultural and political capital, Dublin retains an intimate and welcoming feel, making it the perfect study abroad location for students who want all the excitement of a large city with the friendliness of a small town. ISA students who are interested in studying Business, English, Computer Science, Music, or Engineering can take classes at the renowned Trinity College, University College Dublin, or Maynooth University.
ISA also offers students the opportunity to gain real-world experience with an international internship in Dublin. Since English is the primary language spoken in Dublin, students won’t have to worry about a language barrier as they live, work, and study in this beloved Irish city.
Limerick: Sporty, Artistic, & Lively
Limerick, the “Sporting Capital of Ireland,” is a unique blend of modern and medieval with its 13th-century architecture and modern urban center. Famous for King John’s Castle, the Munster Rugby team, and its legendary nightlife, there’s plenty to do in Ireland’s third largest city. ISA students study and live at the University of Limerick, an all-encompassing large university similar to a U.S. campus, where they can take courses with locals in topics such as music, engineering, business, or health science.
While not as big as Dublin, Limerick still offers a multitude of cultural events and activities for students to experience during their time abroad. ISA Limerick students can take in a rugby match at the famous Thomond Park, grab food at the Milk Market, and stroll the banks of the River Shannon which runs through the university. Starting in 2019, ISA will also be offering service-learning programs in this dynamic city, so stay tuned for more information on this new program!
Galway: Vibrant, Traditional, & Coastal
If you’re looking for a small, quintessential Irish city, look no further than Galway. A harbor city on Ireland’s west coast, Galway is known as the “Culture Capital of Ireland.” Throughout the year, students can check out art, food, and music festivals, including the Galway Film Fleadh, one of Ireland’s premiere film festivals. Galway offers students the chance to truly immerse themselves in the famous Irish culture. It’s the perfect study abroad location for those interested in studying Engineering, Irish Studies, or the Humanities/Social Sciences and want to live off-campus with local Irish students.
ISA also offers service-learning programs in Galway for those interested in community development, health, human rights, and family and youth development. This Irish city is ideal for service-learning because it has a strong culture of student-driven service in the community. For outdoor adventurers, Galway’s prime location makes it easy to explore the majestic Aran Islands in Galway Bay and the rugged wilderness of nearby Connemara. Galway is a small city with a big personality and plenty to offer ISA students.
No matter what you’re looking for in a study abroad experience, Ireland’s got you covered!
