A short drive West from Chile’s capital– Santiago— lies the coastal city of Valparaíso, an education center and major cultural hub for the long, narrow nation that stretches down the pacific coast of South America. The Greater Valparaíso Region is the second largest Metropolitan area in the country and the city of Vaparaíso is the capital of the third most populated region in Chile. However, what makes Valparaíso so eye catching, is the colorful art that is bursting from the buildings and streets of the city– an accurate portrayal of how much culture this city contains. Because of its great cultural affluence and strong influence throughout the history of Chile, the historic quarter of the city was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003, which is one of many reasons to explore this vibrant city.
One clear example of the cultural influence in Valparaíso is the great abundance of street art covering most of the concrete in the city. Found both high and low, arte urbano (street art) can be seen in all corners of the city!
In Valparaíso, the walls and buildings of the city are the artists’ canvas.
Each mural is special and holds a piece of history that allows the viewer a glimpse into the past of this exceptional city. One can spend hours upon hours walking through the streets experiencing the music, people, art, and unique culture that Valparaíso has to offer, and after, still discover something new. I look forward to spending many hours doing exactly this.
The world awaits…discover it.
Small world. I´m a TCNJ graduate and am currently living in La Serena (small north). I´ve been living in Chile for a little over a year. Just thought I´d comment to say hi!
