Interning in London: A Usual Day

Fiona Sackett is a student at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
and an ISA Photo Blogger. She is interning abroad with ISA Internships in London, England.

Being an intern abroad is a lot of different than studying abroad. You will see that on any student blog about going abroad, and it is absolutely true! When interning abroad, there is a lot more reliance on yourself, and generally your time abroad is much longer than if you were just taking a class. You are expected to be at your work place and help with that program, just like in America, but now you have some surprising and subtle differences that come with being overseas.

Don’t get freaked out though–I am definitely loving my experience as an intern and learning a lot! To see what I see on a daily basis, I will walk you through my day.

This is what I walk past every day when I leave at about 9:15am from my apartment. It is simply gorgeous! The area I live in, and specifically my road, Lansdowne, is known for these adorable candy-colored houses.

In addition to having these fantastic houses, most people have great gardens and landscaping despite not have huge lawns like in the United States. Looking at everyone’s different gardens is one of my favorite parts about walking to my tube stop. It takes me about ten minutes to get to the tube stop from my apartment. During my ride I make one transfer, and then I finally arrive in Piccadilly Circus!

Picadilly Circus is sort of like a smaller version of Times Square in New York. In the center is a statue that is always swarmed with tourists or street performers. It is neat to see, but for an intern, it can be very annoying when you are trying to get to work on time.

This is the street where I work–Shaftesbury Avenue! It is one of the bigger streets of London’s West End, also known as London’s theatre district. My internship is with a company called Mousetrap Theatre Projects. It is a charity organization that focuses on helping children and young people see theatre when normally they would not be able to, either because of financial reasons or disabilities.

I am going to skip explaining most of my work day, and my Tesco £3 Meal Deal, in order to get to my favorite part of London–the theatre scene! In just three weeks, I’ve seen so many shows! I can hardly wait to see what else is in store to see during my time in London! Since you can’t usually take pictures of sets because of copyrights, my ticket stubs will have to do.

I usually get home pretty late from shows, but somehow the journey is equally as pretty on my way home, even if you can’t see the pastel houses. Once I get home I have some tea and get ready to do it all over again!

The world awaits…discover it.
