This is by far Barcelona’s most visited museum. This museum traces back to Picasso’s early years and houses plenty of Picasso’s Blue Period canvases such as The Defenceless. The first floor is devoted to Picasso’s Blue Period. Moreover, the second floor displays his artwork produced in Barcelona and Paris between 1900 and 1904.

2. Dalí Theatre and Museum

Address: Plaça Gala i Salvador Dalí, 5, 17600 Figueres, Girona

Figueres was Dalí‘s hometown and the museum is home to one of the largest collections of his work. The building itself is a work of art and the museum itself is the largest surrealist work of art in the world.

*How to get to Figures from Barcelona: RENFE train or bus.

3. Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)

The MACBA museum shines a light for the best of Catalan, Spanish and international contemporary art. The MACA art collection begins in the Gothic chapel of the Convent dels Àngels and continues in the gleaming white building that is located across the square (and skateboarders). The collections inside the MACBA museum change frequently. However, the exhibitions range from artists such as Antoni Tàpies, Joan Brossa, Paul Klee and Alexander Calder to Miquel Barceló and Ferran Garciá Sevilla. When I visited the MACBA museum, the exhibitions that were in display were MIRALDA MADEINUSA and MACBA COLLECTION 31.

4. Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

Address: Palau Nacional, Parc de Montjuïc, s/n, 08038 Barcelona

This is the worthiest of all Barcelona’s art museums. It’s a must go! The MNAC houses numerous of Catalan works that range from the Middle Ages to the 1900s. The museum’s two permanent exhibitions cover the Romanesque period and Gothic art. In addition, MNAC houses Catalan art from mid-19th century to Modernism and Noucentisme.

This is a cultural center and museum that is dedicated to the painter and work of Cataluña’s living artist, Antoni Tàpies. The building of the Fundació is one of Domènech i Montaner’s prototype buildings for Modernisme. The building is designed with coiled wire and it is a sculpture titled Núvol i Cadira. There are many interpretations of the coiled wire but Tàpies believed it reflected the meanderings of his own mind. Antoni Tàpies was extremely experimental with his art and often included subtle political messages. The Fundació was created in 1984 to promote the knowledge and study of contemporary and modern art. The Fundació houses many of Tàpies’ creations and also includes contributions from other artists.

*Interesting Fact: There is a research library devoted to Tàpies and a wide range of contemporary art inside the Fundació!

The world awaits…discover it.
