Starting with the Spring 2017 term, the semester-long programs in Paris will offer students up to three weekend excursion options, from which they can select two. The ISA Paris programs have always included an exceptional weekend excursion to Normandy and Mont Saint Michel as well as a weekend spent visiting the stunning châteaux of the Loire Valley.
In addition to these two weekend options, there are three BRAND NEW possible excursions which may be offered in Paris each semester:
Aix-en-Provence and Cassis:
Aix-en-Provence (often simply referred to as “Aix”) is an elegant and relaxed city in the south of France, known for its art, the warmth of its light, and the constant, ambling activity there. The city was home to Paul Cézanne, the famous French post-impressionist painter, and many of the artist’s later works are still housed in the city today. Aix is often referred to the city of a thousand fountains, the most popular of which is on the Cours Mirabeau (the main avenue through the town).
Cassis is a commune in the South of France in the Provence-Alpes-Côtes d’Azur region of the country. The commune is famous for its cliffs, sheltered inlets (called calanques), and the white and rosé wines the region produces. The city is speckled with charming shops and cafés, and pastel houses line its scenic harbor. After a visit of the city, students will spend time relaxing on its fine sandy beaches.
Bordeaux:
Bordeaux is synonymous with wine in the hearts and minds of people from across the globe, and with good reason! Bordeaux is the world’s major wine industry capital and is home to the “Vinexpo”, the world’s most popular wine fair. Half of this port city is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with over 362 historical monuments; the only city in France with more is Paris. ISA students will be able to visit “Vieux Bordeaux”, walk along the Great Dune of Pyla, and sample some of the region’s best wines at one of the city’s many wineries.
Bruges/Ghent:
Bruges is a timeless city which has remained relatively untouched little since the Middle Ages, making it a delightfully historical place to visit. Known as the “Venice of the North”, visitors to Bruges will enjoy sightseeing, possibly taking a boat ride through the canals, or climbing to the top of the medieval Belfry Tower, which provides stunning views of the city below.
Ghent is a remarkably well-preserved town in Northern Belgium which harkens back to the Middle Ages. On this excursion, students have the opportunity to explore the recently renovated Gravensteen Castle which is surrounded by an authentic medieval moat. They will also explore St. Jacob’s Church, St. Nicholas’ Church, and the Cathedral of St. Bavo, home to the renowned Ghent Altarpiece painted by Jan van Eyck.
