5 Fun Things to do in Port Elizabeth, South Africa

by Brittany Waddell-Allen, ISA South Africa Site Specialist

Although Port Elizabeth is traditionally known for its many beaches and sprawling coastline, there is much more to do and see throughout the city, especially during the milder months! Check out these awesome sites and activities happening in PE during the South African winter:

1) Take a stroll down historic Route 67

This beautiful trail is dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s 67-year political and public life. Filled with creative and intricate artworks paying tribute to South Africa’s complex history and the road to democracy, the path leads up to the largest South African flag in the world!

2) Visit SAMREC

SAMREC is a wildlife refuge for sick and injured penguins and other sea birds. Animal lovers will have the chance to feed these amazing creatures by hand!

3) Do you love art?

Spend a day enjoying the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, which is also home to Port Elizabeth’s Art School. The NMM Art Museum features contemporary art of artists from around the world.

4) Are you a sports fanatic?

See if you can catch a professional rugby or soccer game at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium! What is more South African than that?!

5) Check out Ginger fine dining restaurant.

Ginger has been voted the best restaurant in Port Elizabeth! Located right on the water, enjoy everything from fresh steaks and chops, to the finest in seafood! Or for those looking for a more casual (yet still yummy!) dining experience, check out Charlies Pizza & Pasta. From delicious fish bowls, to amazing brick oven pizzas, there is something for every taste!
