If right now you’re thinking ‘what the heck is a trdelnik and how do I pronounce it?’ then you are in the right place. If not, you can stick around anyways.

A few weeks ago a photo of a trdelnik chimney with ice cream in it took the internet by storm as food lovers across the world demanded to know where this magical pastry originated from. The precise origins of the trdelnik (or turtleneck as my friends call it) are a bit unclear; however, Prague boasts a wide variety. Last weekend as a few of my friends and I stood outside of a small bakery in Cesky Krumlov devouring our trdelniks, at least fifteen English-speaking tourists strolling by stopped to interrogate us on what we were consuming and the level of skill it required. As each person we spoke with filed into the bakery after speaking with us, I would say the Nutella coated trdelnik in my hands–and all over my face–was the best salesmen.

The most popular place to get one in Prague is a small shop across from Charles Bridge. Of course, there are hidden suppliers of this addictive pastry spread throughout the city.

This helpful diagram shows you what exactly you’re consuming if you choose to elect the whipped cream route. Beyond the sweet options there now exists savory options! You can choose from a caprese salad ‘chimney’ or even a pizza one! Of course the original cinnamon Nutella Trdelnik never disappoints.
