Five Diverse Regions, One Country: Chile.
2,690 miles in length and no more than 112 miles wide, there are 5 distinct geographical regions in Chile, just waiting to be explored! Whether you’re on a tight budget or have some extra money to spend, these save and splurge ideas are sure to enhance your study abroad experience in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar. Follow us on a five part journey through the Norte Grande, Norte Chico, Zona Central, Zona Sur and Zona Austral.
Part 4 – Zona Sur
Notably one of Chile’s most picturesque regions, the Lake District is a must visit. This region has been compared to Switzerland with its lush forests, numerous lakes and ice capped volcanos in the background. Rain fall is to be expected year round, but to avoid flooding-affecting travel arrangements, plan this trip somewhere between May and October.
Save
Visit the haunted (according to the Chilean legend) Island of Chiloé. This island is full of eerie lakeside towns, layered in fog and home to the historic wooden churches. (16 have been named UNESCO heritage sites). The larger town of Castro, will be your transportation hub on the island, allowing you to explore the coastal towns. The ever present fog only enhances the haunted feel. Valdivia is the location to explore the unique intercultural blend of Chilean and German architecture and cuisine.
Splurge
Don’t miss out on the optional ISA excursion to Pucón! This quaint town and the activities available will not let you down and is well worth the added cost! Waterfalls found on horseback, zip lining and volcano climbing are just a few of the opportunities available!
