Dublin is not only the capital of the Republic of Ireland, but is also the country’s largest city. It might be hard to believe, but approximately 50% of Dubliners are under the age of 25.
In 1903, St. Patrick’s Day became an official holiday in Ireland and the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Dublin in 1931. In the mid-1990’s the Irish government created the St. Patrick’s Day festival to promote Ireland and its culture, which has since become a 5 day festival filled with music, performances and fireworks.

Intercultural
Intercultural experiences highlight exposure with the local culture, promoting a multilateral exchange of ideas, language and opinions.
Take in some Irish Music. Dublin is one of the leading music capitals of the world. Bands like U2, the Dubliners, Thin Lizzy and the Script all started in Dublin. ISA Dublin students will have ample of opportunities to immerse themselves in the local Dublin culture and listen to local Irish music.
Get involved on campus. Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and Maynooth University offer over two-hundred clubs and societies for both ISA students and local Irish students to participate in. These clubs and societies are a great way for students to interact with local Irish students and learn more about the local culture.
Historical
ISA excursions and cultural activities highlight historical parts of the local culture to help students better understand their new environment.
Take a trip to Dublin Castle. Commissioned by King John (the villainous King from the Robin Hood legends) in 1204, Dublin Castle has an extensive history intertwined with that of the shamrock country itself.
Enjoy one of the most famous books in the world. ISA Dublin students will be able to visit Trinity College Dublin’s extravagant library and see the famous Book of Kells. The Book of Kells is a manuscript Gospel book created in 800 AD. This book is considered Ireland’s finest national treasure.
Sociopolitical
Sociopolitical discovery highlights social and political activities or experiences.
Dublin has been the capital city of the Republic of Ireland since 1922. The city is now the home to the national parliament of Ireland, the President of Ireland, and the Prime Minister of Ireland.
Three former Presidents of Ireland and five former Prime Ministers of Ireland studied at University College Dublin.
Professional
Professional experiences provide exposure to professional development opportunities during an ISA program.
Study at one of the top universities in the world. Trinity College Dublin is ranked nationally and internationally among the top universities in the world by The QS World University Rankings. The university is ranked 1st in Ireland, 18th in Europe and 61st in the world.
Ireland is home to many of the world’s largest tech companies like Apple, Twitter, and Google. Oracle Capital Group reported that Ireland was the most entrepreneurial country in Europe in 2014.
Environmental
Environmental experiences expose students to different environmental aspects of the host country.
Dublin has the most green space out of any European capital city. There are about 7.3 acres of green space for every 1,000 people. Some of Dublin’s most famous parks include Phoenix Park, Herbert Park, and St. Stephen’s Green.
University College Dublin has put a University Sustainability Policy in place. This plan includes initiatives to construct more sustainable buildings on campus, to implement a more sustainable campus transportation infrastructure and to be more environmentally-conscious with the use of re-usable materials.
