Did you know that criminology began in Italy? This scientific study of crime as a social phenomenon of criminals, and of penal treatment, dates back centuries but it was Cesare Lombroso and his advances in the study of crime in the late-eighteenth-century that was most influential to the field. As a matter of fact, the first use of the word criminology, or better yet criminologia, was coined by Italian law professor Raffaele Garofalo back in 1882. This makes Rome the obvious study abroad location choice for criminology.
