When Córdoba was awarded the hefty title of Cultural Capital of the Americas back in 2006, the label seemed to fit like a glove. The city at the center of the Pampas is truly one of contrasts, with 17th-century Jesuit ruins, a lively student population and an all-around buzzing atmosphere. Córdoba has become a more popular study abroad destination in recent years, and for good reason. Here are five things you’re not to miss:
1. Alta Gracia. Located just a step outside Córdoba, this beautiful historical city was once an Argentine traditional estancia (ranch) during the 17th century. Make sure to set aside some time to wander through the streets of Alta Garcia. Whatever you do, don’t leave without visiting the Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara Museum.
2. La Cañada. A running stream that flows through the southeastern part of the city, La Cañada originates high in the Sierras de Córdoba. This gentle brook of water has been around since the 17th century and was formally declared a city landmark in 1941. It is now an icon of the city.
3. La Rueda de Eiffel. At a first glance it seems to be little more than a rusted old Ferris wheel, but upon closer inspection it’s clear that the tower is made entirely of iron in the same style of the Eiffel Tower. Designed in 1916 by the famed Gustav Eiffel to commemorate 100 years of independence for Argentina, the Rueda de Eiffel can be found in the beautiful Parque de Sarmiento, where it stands out to this day as an international landmark.
4. Teatro del Libertador San Martín. Inaugurated in 1891, Córdoba ‘s Libertador Theater is the oldest functioning theater in all of Argentina. The theater has become a focal point of cultural and artistic identity for the whole of Argentina.
5. Manzana Jesuítica. Walking through the Jesuit Block is like taking a step back in time. Dating back to the 17th century and recently declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Manzana Jesuítica contains churches, schools and other structures that offer a glimpse into the religious, social and economic history of Argentina. It is also home to the National University of Córdoba
