We’re declaring it now: 2022 is the year of study abroad! Wondering how to set yourself up for the adventure of a lifetime next year? ISA is here to help. Keep reading to learn how you can study abroad in 2022—from program options and locations to staying safe abroad and more, we’ve got you covered!
What are my program options?
The ultimate classic: enjoy educational opportunities at distinguished host universities abroad. You’ll be taking courses just like you do right now, but you’ll immerse yourself in a different culture and forge lasting relationships with students from around the world. We offer semester long programs, shorter programs that run over the summer, J-Term, or even intensive month-long programs for topics like language study.
Develop both personally and professionally with a global internship. Together, we’ll customize an experience that matches your goals and qualifications while taking you to a destination you’ve always wanted to visit for an experience you’ll never forget. You can intern full time over the summer or semester with the option of earning academic credit, and you’ll find that many of our locations offer a part-time internship option alongside your classes.
Discover the unique opportunity to make an impact through international service. Using a community-based approach, we’ll connect you with local, grassroots organizations where you’ll learn about impactful community development strategies from regional experts while developing your intercultural competency and leadership skills.
No matter which program you pick, know that you can apply with confidence! Our COVID-19 program cancellation policy gives you full flexibility should your program be canceled, including the ability to receive a full refund.
Where in the world can I go?
It’s entirely up to you! Here are some of our most popular locations with programs that we expect to travel in 2022:

With its varied landscapes, cultural customs, and four official languages, each region of Spain feels like its own world. The spectacular art, architecture, food, and people found throughout the country beautifully combine to create a place that’s perfectly primed for exploration. Lucky for you, we’ve got programs in eight cities, including Barcelona, Salamanca, Seville, and Madrid!

Study abroad in Costa Rica and you’ll get to explore the country’s exquisite natural surroundings, vibrant culture, and cosmopolitan cities through an academic lens. With programs in both Heredia and San José, you’re able to choose between a relaxed, quaint university town or the political, economic, and cultural hub of Costa Rica.

Visiting Italy gives you the opportunity to experience outstanding cuisine, varied landscapes, unparalleled artistic works, and the historic wonders that make this country such a desirable destination. We offer programs in Florence, Rome, and Milan, where you can learn Italian, study courses from a wide variety of fields, and take part in experiential learning activities.

Head to Lille or Paris for a unique perspective into the deep values of a nation steeped in cultural pride and tradition. The allure of France as a study abroad destination lies in its reputation for having an inspirational effect on curious minds, as well as its world-class art, architecture, gastronomy, style, and more.

Studying abroad in England will give you the authentic British experience as well as insight into the country that has influenced cultures across the globe. Oxford will show you a rich academic and cultural history, Reading provides a more suburban and local experience, and London will expand your sights across arts, humanities, and fashion in one of the most famous capitals of the world.
Don’t see your dream location listed? You can find all our destinations and program options here. We’re currently accepting applications for all 2022 locations, and we’ll keep you posted on program status along the way.
Is it safe to study abroad?
The safety, security, and well-being of our program participants is of utmost importance to us, and we have a robust infrastructure of guidelines and protocols put in place to make your program as safe as possible. We’ve added additional health and safety protocols to our programs in light of COVID-19.
Here are just some of the ways we offer support throughout your program:
Onsite Staff
You’ll always have someone nearby to lend a helping hand. Our local staff are available 24/7 to support you however you need during your program, whether that’s accompanying you to a doctor’s appointment, assisting you with insurance reimbursement, or helping you find the services you need in your host city.
Celia was the best advisor I could have asked for! She went above and beyond the entirety of the trip and made us feel right at home! Her plans were engaging and fun and truly made it a memorable experience. I cannot say enough good things about all the work she put in to make the summer incredible.

Pre-Departure Orientation
You’ll start receiving safety information for your program as soon as your application is accepted, and you’ll learn even more during your online pre-departure orientation. During this safety orientation, we’ll cover a variety of valuable information and provide recommended safety precautions, share links to several health and safety resources, and discuss important ISA information for emergency situations.
On-Site Orientation
Once you arrive on-site, you’ll have an orientation with our onsite resident staff, who will provide useful information on acclimation to the host culture as well as emergency procedures. During these orientations, you’ll be given specific COVID-19 protocol information for your host country, which may include quarantine upon arrival, the use of face masks, observation of social distancing measures and limitations on gatherings (established by local, state, and federal governments), and any rules established by attractions, sites, and service providers (e.g., host universities, housing, airlines, hotels, restaurants, etc.).
Additionally, we ask that students wear face masks when participating in any ISA-sponsored activity throughout their program.
Insurance
A Blanket Accident and Sickness Policy is included in the program price, which covers you during your program. This is not an optional benefit; every ISA participant will be covered by this plan. You find all the fine details on coverage here.
Should I study abroad in 2022?
You know our answer: YES!!! While study abroad (and life in general) looks a little different right now, a life-changing experience is still very much possible. Keep in mind that you may need to change your original plans and consider an alternate location or a different term, and our team is here to advise you on the variety of options available. It’s important to be flexible, adaptable, and open-minded—which are all skills you’ll strengthen during your program. Just remember, no matter what, we’re here to help make study abroad happen!

Studying abroad during a pandemic got me completely out of my comfort zone, but I was able to improve my Spanish, learn about myself and another culture, and make friends that I will have for the rest of my life. I do not regret my decision to study abroad or to use ISA at all!
