In the short amount of time I’ve spent studying abroad I’ve had time to experience some of the activities and get acclimated to the culture here in Brisbane. Here’s my list of things that you must try, and some things to avoid during your time in Australia.
DO: Experience the many beautiful beaches and oceans that Oz has to offer
Powder soft sand, endless sunshine, ocean waves, beaches with skyline views… What more could you want?
DON’T: Forget the sunscreen!
The hole in the ozone layer falls right above Australia, making the sun’s UV rays much more potent. This MN girl is not used to 90 degree winters, so I have been getting much more sun than I would have back at home! Sunscreen is crucial to make sure that I’m not hurting the next day and have to miss out on a day of adventure!
DO: Experience some local culture!
The EKKA, sporting events, so much to see and do! Immerse yourself in as much as you possibly can to get the most out of the different way of life.
DON’T: Walk on the right side of the road
Since the cars drive on the left side of the road, that means the people walk on the left side of the sidewalk too. I have almost run into people so many times! It’s a hard habit to break, but a necessary one!
DO: Go to class
I have to keep reminding myself that at the end of the day, I’m in Australia to study abroad. There are so many fun things to do and see, but by going to class, you’ll get more out of the material than if you were to just read the textbook, which ultimately results in passing the class. It is really easy to put things off and never get around to reading a chapter, so by going to class, it’s already checked off your list! Plus it’s a great way to make some new friends!
DON’T: Sleep in
You’ll miss these great sunrise views.
DO: Take advantage of all the free events happening around city and campus
Food festivals, produce markets, concerts. There is almost always something happening that you can attend free of charge (right up this college girl’s alley).
DON’T: Ever go home ?
I’m thinking about it :)
The world awaits…discover it.
