There are many reasons I consider myself super lucky to study in Barcelona. Not only is there so much to do in the city itself, but there are many destinations around the city you can travel to as well! So for those weekends that you end up not leaving the city but still want to explore, here are my 3 favorite weekend getaways that are within an hour of the city by public transport.
- Costa Brava
Costa Brava is a coastal region of Catalonia that stretches across Northeastern Spain. There are many beach destinations and fishing towns to choose from. I went to Tossa de Mar, which is about an hour fifteen minutes outside of Barcelona by bus. You can leave on the morning bus and soak up some good views and seafood, and be back by 8 in Barcelona to enjoy the nightlife.
Montserrat is a beautiful Benedictine monk mountain retreat that is one hour Northwest of Barcelona by train. You can take a train all the way to the top or hike the whole way up. Be prepared to spend a full day there and seeing some of the most unique rock formations.
Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona. It is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola, and it offers amazing views of the city. At the top is an amusement park that is one of the oldest in the world. There you can ride many different rides, such as the Ferris wheel. More importantly, there is the spectacular Sagrot Cor Church, which was modeled after Sacre Coeur in Paris, and is topped by the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
So, the next time you find yourself in Barcelona wanting to explore areas outside of the city, I hope you go visit these three wonderful places. The views are worth it!
The world awaits…discover it.
