As my study abroad experience in Buenos Aires comes to a close, I look back on the past five and a half months and can pick out ten great things that changed my perspective of Buenos Aires and my experience living and learning abroad as a whole.
- Language Exchanges (Intercambios): To get more practice with my spoken Spanish I attended a couple different intercambios. I went to these with the hope of speaking with locals or whoever else decided to show up, but every time I left with a new contact or friend in the city. Being the huge city that it is, it is difficult to meet people. Through Mundo Lingo and the intercambios arranged through ISA, I met friends that I will keep in touch with after I leave.
- Tour of the ‘Casa Rosada’: Its free and was very interesting to see the building I see on the news everyday.
My favorite room on the tour! - MALBA: Being a lover of all things artistic, I had a great time visiting this modern art museum more than once during my stay.
Yayoi Kusama Exhibit] - San Telmo Feria: This famous market in San Telmo was my favorite Sunday pastime. Even when I didn’t buy anything, it was always interesting to chat with the craftsmen and -women.
- Park Culture: Seeing as no one in the city has a yard to lay in or to let their dog roam free, people go to parks. Once the weather warmed up, I loved spending the afternoon lounging in fresh-cut grass, drinking mate and taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi.
- Movie Fridays: For the past couple months I have seen a movie every single Friday. At Belgrano Multiplex a ticket is only 20 pesos, the equivalent of about US$ 3.00.
- Barrio Chino: Another Friday tradition is eating a cheap lunch in Chinatown. Great food and good prices.
- Fuerza Bruta: A must see if you are in Buenos Aires. It’s a somewhat interactive show and amazing display of modern art.
- Recoleta Cemetery: I love to take pictures and found myself here a few times doing just that. Every time I discovered a new piece of argentine history.
- San Isidro: One spring day I spent by the river and passing through the streets of San Isidro. Its right outside of city limits, accessible by train and a great change of pace from the hustle and bustle of the city center.
